Description

"But you'll fight and you'll make it through
You'll fake it if you have to
And you'll show up for work with a smile
And you'll be better
You'll be smarter
More grown up and a better daughter or son
And a real good friend
And you'll be awake
You'll be alert
You'll be positive though it hurts
And you'll laugh and embrace all of your friends
And you'll be a real good listener
You'll be honest
You'll be brave
You'll be handsome and you'll be beautiful
You'll be happy
"

~ excerpt from "A Better Son/Daughter - Rilo Kiley" (dedicated to *kippixin for some personal reasons and also for recommending me this song)

I'm sure that you know what I mean with this photograph. The high expectations set by parents - or everyone - that you just sometimes can't live up to. Sometimes it's to live out their dreams in their children (especially for those 'stage moms' I encountered every day when I was still in modeling -_-), sometimes it's for money (as depicted). This is particularly known in Asian families, for the 'why did you get a 99 and not a 100?' and even hitting their kids if they don't get straight A+s.

In my own family, I can't say that it's that extreme, but excellent grades are just expected - nothing out of the ordinary. For example, my cousin got a perfect math SAT score and is applying for all these Ivy League colleges. What does my aunt think? She thinks he's not trying hard enough.

As for myself, my parents didn't think my daily appearance on national TV last summer (modeling) was anything out of the ordinary either. When I asked my dad why he didn't praise me for it, he just shrugged and said, "Well, don't I go on CCTV2 (national economics/money channel) for my 'expert opinion' all the time?". Never mind that I've been reading chapter books since I was four or that I'm doing pre-cal right now and I'm only thirteen. -_-;

I know a girl who was disowned by her parents, because she refused to become a doctor. This picture is in retailation to all those parents. I think I'm lucky. While my parents would be extremely disappointed in me if I went to just any college, or something like that, they wouldn't disown me (hah, cutting me off my inheritance or giving it to my brother is a possibility though :P) or kill me (speaking of killing, I know this woman who drowned her baby in the bathtub because she was a girl...fucking murderer) or something like that. As long as I've 'tried my best', they say they'll be happy. I guess, they don't really have a reason to COMPLAIN about me at the moment as well as having no real reason to praise me.

Yes, everything in this picture is posed. Yes, the money is real. No, my mother didn't really write that on my homework. Nor is it really my homework, for that matter.

And I swear, I'll really try to be a better everything. A better friend. Hell. A better daughter.
